What’s New in VMware Workstation Pro 16?
Containers and Kubernetes
VMWare supports Containers and VMWare workstations with the command-line tool: vctl.
Vctl now allows users to drag and drop OCI container images, build them, and then run them. It also has the capability to deploy Kubernetes clusters.
Vctl supports this type by creating a ” compatible socket“, which can be used to connect without modification using containers. VMware looks forward to working with the open-source community to support more tools, workflows, and technologies.

DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.1.1
Workstation 16, supports running games and apps with Direct3D 11, also known by the names ‘DirectX 11 or OpenGL 4.1’. Users can now allocate as much as 8GB of virtual RAM to speed up 3D processing and maximize 3D performance in games and applications.
Compatibility with vSphere 7
The workstation is updated to support connectivity with vSphere 8 via ESXi for remote VM configuration and operation. It also provides flexibility in managing workloads, as well as compatibility between Desktop- and Datacenter-based virtual infrastructure.
Dark Mode UI
The first thing you may notice when launching Workstation for Windows is the new Dark Mode. This feature has been added to both Workstation Player and Workstation Pro. This new, striking look is right at home with the latest Windows 10 versions.
Sandboxed Graphics Engine
Sandbox Renderer is a new feature that enhances security in Workstation. SBR runs Fusion and Workstation’s virtual graphics engine on separate threads and with limited system privileges. This makes Fusion and Workstation more secure without sacrificing quality or performance.
Linux Server: Vulkan Graphics Rendering Engine
Workstation 16 for Linux now includes a new rendering engine that leverages the Vulkan API. With our new Vulkan rendering engine, we can deliver DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 3.0 to virtual machines even when they are using an Intel-integrated GPU.
Accessibility improvements
We are committed to making computing accessible for all. We’ve enhanced VPAT Section 508 compliance to ensure that users of all kinds can enjoy the full benefits of virtual machines.
USB 3.1 Support + Performance and Bug Fixes
This release also includes support for USB 3.0 virtual devices. USB 3.0 hardware devices can be ported into virtual machines and have full driver support.
